Judge John B. Riordan, formerly the Judge of the Nassau County Surrogate’s Court (2000-2010), joined Garden City’s Reisman Peirez Reisman & Capobianco as Senior Counsel to the Firm on Jan 2, 2012. As Senior Counsel to the Firm, Judge Riordan provides the Firm’s clients with his experience in the Trusts and Estates Department concentrating on estate and trust litigation, wills, estate planning, probate and estate administration.
Judge Riordan served as the Judge of the Nassau County Surrogate’s Court from January 1, 2001 until December 31, 2010. As Surrogate, he presided over lawsuits involving inheritance rights, trusts, wills, estate administration, and the financial and business affairs of decedents. He also presided over adoptions and guardianships of children and mentally or developmentally disabled persons. Prior to being elected Surrogate, Judge Riordan served for seven years as a judge of the Nassau County District Court. Judge Riordan has the distinction of having 314 of his written decisions chosen for publication in the New York Official Reports as significant contributions to the common law of New York State.
Following his graduation, Judge Riordan was a tax accountant at an international accounting firm and then a litigation associate at a Garden City, Long Island law firm. For 11 years thereafter he practiced law at Ferris Bangs Davis Trafford & Syz, a Manhattan law firm, where he gained extensive experience in commercial transactions, drafting and negotiating business contracts, bankruptcy, estate planning, personal and estate taxation and litigation. Judge Riordan then joined Wingate & Cullen on Long Island, where he was partner and senior counsel advising clients in estate planning, preparation of wills and trusts, probate, estate administration, inheritance rights and litigation.
